λ A Chinese mid-19th century Qing dynasty Cantonese 'thousand faces' mandarin export fan (中國象牙扇), the colourful paper leaf, painted recto and verso with a multitude of courtiers and scholars in interiors, with applied ivory faces and silk fabric robes, having deep carved and pierced ivory guards superbly carved in very high relief, the sticks similar but in low relief, with silk tassel on suspension loop, contained within its original fitted gilt lacquer box which retains the original interior glass lid and is lined with silk and similarly painted to the leaf, 28cm long
